Children’s Respiratory Infections Surge – What Parents Need To Know

A surge in pediatric respiratory infections has been making headlines. Not only is the number of cases unusual, so is the timing.  The respiratory infection season typically begins in the winter months. However, Sankaran Krishnan, MD, Acting Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy, Immunology and Sleep Medicine at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, a member of Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), advises parents and caregivers not to panic.

“Most cases of respiratory infection are relatively mild and can be treated effectively with over-the-counter medications and supportive care,” says Dr. Krishnan. The more acute cases that require hospitalization generally occur in children who have a pre-existing condition, although I have treated children with acute respiratory illness who had no prior medical history.”

Dr. Krishnan adds the surge is due in part to unmasking after the pandemic and young children returning to larger group settings without some of the virus immunities that naturally develop via exposure.  Standard infection control tactics, such as frequent hand washing and surface disinfection, should help stem the infection tide, says Dr. Krishnan.

While the surge is unusual, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is equipped with talented specialists, incredible nurses, advanced technology and techniques, and continues to provide efficient and effective care in an environment safe for children and their families.  Caregivers should NOT delay care for an ill or injured child; please call your child’s pediatrician or bring them to your local ED.
