Board Certification: Obstetrics and Gynecology
Patrick M. Popiel, MD, is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and specializes in female pelvic
medicine and reconstructive surgery (urogynecology). Dr. Popiel is an emerging leader in
his field, and has recently been recognized by the American Association of Gynecologic
Laparoscopists (AAGL) for his excellence in minimally invasive surgery. Additionally, he was
honored with the Excellence in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery award by the
American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS).
Dr. Popiel received his medical degree from the Medical University of Lodz in Lodz, Poland. He
completed his obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health residency with the Atlantic Health
System, predominately based in Morristown, NJ, where he was the Educational Chief Resident.
During his residency, he also participated in the visiting resident program at the renowned
MAYO Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He then completed his female pelvic medicine and
reconstructive surgery (department of obstetrics and gynecology) fellowship at the Yale School
of Medicine in New Haven, CT. During his fellowship, he presented his research on urothelial
defense mechanisms against urinary tract infections as well as assessment of post-operative
voiding function at national conferences.
In addition to his field specific society memberships and certifications, Dr. Popiel has published
numerous research papers and journal abstracts. His work on indwelling vs. immediate removal
transurethral catheters after robotic surgery was awarded the Top Research Study at 21st
Annual Atlantic Health Research Symposium.
