Total Hip Surgery and Total Knee Surgery

Welcome to the Joint Replacement Program at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Westchester Medical Center. As a regional referral center, our fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons provide total hip and knee replacement procedures, including revision surgery, for some of the most complex cases in New York, from Valhalla to the Canadian border.

Our surgical team partners with a team of anesthesiologists dedicated exclusively to arthroplasty (joint replacement) and other specialists to provide quality outcomes and a full continuum of care for patients of all risk levels.

We use leading robotic-assisted joint replacement technologies, such as Stryker’s Mako platform, and can provide hypoallergenic alloys for patients with metal allergies.

After surgery, our team coordinates with inpatient and outpatient physical therapists to maximize quality outcomes. We also partner with medical suppliers to ensure patients have convenient, rapid access to necessary devices, such as walkers, which can be delivered in-hospital and available for you to take home.

To request an appointment, or refer a patient for total knee or hip replacement surgery, please call 914.789.2700.

Hip Replacement Surgery and Revision

Orthopaedic surgeons at Westchester Medical Center perform total hip replacement surgeries for patients who experience reduced mobility, pain, and other symptoms that commonly result from a damaged hip joint.

Additionally, all of our orthopaedic surgeons are fellowship-trained revisionists, meaning they have the expertise to correctly perform follow-up hip surgeries for patients who may have had a suboptimal experience previously at another facility.

Hip surgery may be a same-day procedure, or your orthopaedic doctor may recommend an overnight stay. Whether you go home or stay a night at Westchester Medical Center, our rehabilitation partners will likely have you up and moving the same day of your operation.

A Regional Referral Center

As a regional referral center, our surgical team and facility are equipped to provide excellent care for even the most complex patients. We frequently see patients from as far away as the Canadian border. Westchester Medical Center is a go-to referral hub for higher-risk patients, including elderly patients and those who have medical issues such as chronic pain or blood clots.

At Westchester Medical Center, all the care you need is under one roof. This allows our total hip replacement surgical team to provide advanced care for every patient.

Is Total Hip Replacement Surgery Right for Me?

Only a physician can answer this question after evaluating your hip and discussing your health and lifestyle goals. However, many people may choose to pursue hip replacement surgery if they are unable to achieve relief through conventional therapies such as weight loss, exercise, pain medication, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory injections. If you’re experiencing pain in the hips while walking, sitting down, standing up – or even while sedentary – then it’s possible that hip replacement surgery could be a viable therapy.

How Does Hip Replacement Surgery Work?

During hip replacement surgery, the orthopaedic surgeon removes damaged bone and cartilage in the hip joint. The surgeon then replaces the hip’s “ball and socket” with artificial prosthetics made of titanium, ceramic, hard plastic, or other materials. We partner with physical therapists within the Westchester Medical Center Health Network to maximize your opportunity for an effective, safe recovery.

Knee Replacement Surgery and Revision

Orthopaedic surgeons at Westchester Medical Center perform total knee replacement surgery, also known as “TKR,” for patients with knee pain, reduced mobility, osteoarthritis, and other conditions or symptoms that may negatively affect quality of life.

Furthermore, our orthopaedic surgeons are fellowship-trained revisionists, meaning they have the expertise to correctly perform follow-up knee surgeries for patients who may have had a poor experience previously at another facility.

Knee surgery may be a same-day procedure, or your orthopaedic doctor may recommend an overnight stay. Whether you go home or stay a night at Westchester Medical Center, the rehabilitation specialists with whom we partner may have you up and moving the same day of your operation.

Is Total Knee Replacement Surgery Right for Me?

Only a physician can answer this question after evaluating your knee and discussing your health and lifestyle goals. If you have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee or experience any of the following symptoms, then you may be a candidate for knee replacement surgery:

  • Bowing of the legs
  • Severe knee pain that interferes with daily life
  • Constant knee pain while at rest (day or night)
  • Inflammation or swelling of the knee that does not respond to anti-inflammatory drugs

How Does Knee Replacement Surgery Work?

During knee replacement surgery, the orthopaedic surgeon removes damaged bone and cartilage in the knee joint. The surgeon then replaces the damaged knee joint with an artificial prosthesis or an implant. The procedure typically takes one to two hours. After surgery, we partner with physical therapists within the Westchester Medical Center Health Network to maximize your opportunity for an effective, safe recovery.
