Bennie W. Chiles III, MD, FAANS, FACS, is a New York City native, born in Manhattan and raised largely in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. He attended the Bronx High School of Science, graduating in 1982 with honors, and then went to Harvard University, graduating with honors in Biological Science in 1986. He then attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, graduating in 1991. His time in medical school included a one-year laboratory research fellowship in neurosurgery. From 1991 to 1998, he completed his residency in neurosurgery, as well as a combined orthopedic-neurosurgical fellowship in complex spine surgery, both at New York University (NYU) Medical Center in Manhattan.

He has been in private neurosurgical practice in Westchester since 1998, and has performed well over 3,000 major operative procedures. He served as Director of Spinal Neurosurgery and Neurotrauma at Westchester Medical Center from 1998 to 2005. Since 2005, he has operated Westchester Spine and Brain Surgery, PLLC, a multi-hospital private neurosurgical practice which provides state-of-the-art surgical evaluation and treatment for a wide variety of conditions related to the spine and brain, with emphasis on surgical spine problems such as disc herniations and spinal stenosis, often requiring complex operative treatments such as laminectomies, discectomies, and fusions. Dr. Chiles also specializes in innovative techniques such as minimally invasive spinal surgery, computer-guided surgery, and cervical artificial disc placement.

Dr. Chiles is an attending neurosurgeon at numerous hospitals throughout Westchester and Connecticut, including White Plains Hospital Center, New York Presbyterian-Lawrence Hospital, Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital, St. John's Riverside Hospital including the Dobbs Ferry Pavilion, Westchester Medical Center, and Stamford Hospital. He is also an attending neurosurgeon at New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center, and the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases (NYU-HJD) in New York City. He currently serves as Chief of Neurosurgery at New York Presbyterian-Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, New York. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the New York University (NYU) Department of Neurosurgery, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at New York Medical College.

He was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 2002, and was named a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2004. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, as well as an active member of the New York State Neurosurgical Society, where he serves as a member of the Board of Directors, and is also Past-President. Dr. Chiles has authored a number of scientific publications and book chapters within neurosurgery, and presented numerous times at conferences both locally and nationally.
