The Emergency Department at Westchester Medical Center (WMC) is the only Level 1 Trauma Center for the Hudson Valley Region. Our facilities provide complex, multidisciplinary emergency care 24 hours a day to adult and pediatric patients, including walk-ins, those brought in by EMS, and trauma cases transferred from other facilities. Serving all levels of emergency need, we are the local hospital of choice for the most critically injured patients requiring the most advanced intervention available.

Adult Emergency Department

As a Level 1 Trauma Center, our Department is staffed with trauma surgeons and critical-care specialists; our facility is equipped with a full array of advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies.

The Emergency Department at Westchester Medical Center features dedicated areas for trauma and burn care, CT technology and real-time digital radiography with multiple viewing stations, enabling physicians to quickly view and interpret CT scans, MRI results, sonograms and reports. We also utilize a digital documentation system that tracks physician documentation and interfaces with other hospital departments, allowing for quick retrieval of up-to-date records and treatment history – a critical need when time is of the essence.

Pediatric Emergency Department

Part of the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, we are also home to the region’s only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center with 24-hour MedEvac helicopter and ground transport. STAT Flight-staffed helicopters include teams of critical care flight nurses and paramedics. Aviation services are provided by Air Methods Corporation. Behavioral Health Emergency Services

Behavioral Health Emergency Services are provided in the WMC Emergency Department seven days a week, 24 hours a day. We are located in Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and in the Adult Emergency Department. We offer inpatient admissions and referrals to outpatient clinics and programs, including day treatment and partial hospitalization programs. The Behavioral Health Emergency Services team focuses on your safety and comfort, as well as the safety of others during the mental health assessment.

Our Services 

Our advanced technologies and services are critical to our provision of prompt and effective emergency care. Working in tandem with the WMC Transfer Center, we provide initial consultation and stabilization for patients transferred to the Emergency Department and serve as Medical Control for Emergency Medical Services. Our department works closely with STAT Flight to ensure the rapid transport of critically ill patients while providing medical instructions to the helicopter staff.

Patient Services

STAT Flight*

STAT, short for stabilization, treatment and transport, provides safe, high-quality specialized critical care transport both in the air and on the ground. STAT Flight air and ground services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to accident scenes and perform critical intra-hospital transfers. *Aviation services provided by Air Methods Corporation.

Trauma Center

The Emergency Department is an integral part of Westchester Medical Center’s certified Level 1 Trauma Center and houses three trauma resuscitation rooms along with an in-department CT scan. 24/7 care is available for all types of trauma, including head injury and spinal cord injury. Our facility is staffed by Neurosurgical Traumatologists, dedicated Neurocritical Care Specialists, and Endovascular Neurosurgeons. Neuro-Spine

The Spine Care Program at Westchester Medical Center is a multidisciplinary program dedicated to providing advanced comprehensive care for a wide variety of spinal conditions and disorders. The team is comprised of experts from the departments of Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pain Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Anesthesia, Oncology and Neuroradiology. Learn more.

Neuro-Trauma

Direct trauma to the brain requires careful and dedicated care––often over a lengthy course of rehabilitation. Neuro-trauma patients at Westchester Medical Center are cared for by a dedicated team of rehab specialists in both the inpatient care and emergent settings.

Stroke Center

Our coordinated multidisciplinary stroke team provides immediate care to patients suffering from acute neurologic disease, serving as the initial point of entry for patients who may need highly specialized care from Westchester Medical Center's Neuroscience Center. We are the region’s only certified Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Cardiac Care

We provide regional cardiac care and have five active cardiac catheterization labs. Our department works closely with the cardiology staff to provide rapid stabilization for patients with cardiac disease, and to stabilize patients presenting with both cardiac and vascular surgical emergencies.

Pediatric Emergency Department

The Pediatric Emergency Department is part of The Maria Fareri Children's Hospital and is staffed with nurses and physicians who specialize in emergency care of children. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to all critically ill or injured children from newborns to 18 year olds.

Disaster Preparedness

Our coordinated multi-hospital disaster preparedness efforts are a critical component of the disaster safety net for Westchester County. Through the School of Public Health's Center for Disaster Preparedness, faculty members provide education and support on many topics relating to disaster preparedness. Our trauma center is also the designated trauma center for triage and emergency care in the event of a large-scale disaster.

Burn Center

Westchester Medical Center is home to the only Burn Center between New York City and the Canadian border in Eastern New York. We maintain a team of highly trained and dedicated burn surgeons and specialists who provide a full range of services from intensive care to rehabilitation. Injury Prevention Program

The Injury Prevention Program offers a variety of programs aimed at preventing injuries in children and adults in our region. All of our programs are presented by experts in the field of trauma care and include education on safe driving, bike safety and airbag safety. We offer programs for any size or age group, and work with a variety of organizations and companies to tailor programs for their particular needs.

Education

The Emergency Department at Westchester Medical Center is an academic department providing training to Emergency Medicine and Pediatric residents, as well as to residents rotating through our department as part of their education in a variety of other residency training programs through New York Medical College.

Research

Our faculty is engaged in a number of specialized and multidisciplinary research efforts and clinical trials reflecting a broad array of scientific interests.

Westchester Medical Center's Emergency Department is a Level 1 Trauma Center, part of an extensive trauma response system for the Hudson Valley region. Our hospital differs from other hospitals by guaranteeing immediate on-site access to specialized surgeons, anesthesiologists, orthopaedists, neurosurgeons and other specialty physicians and nurses, as well as to sophisticated resuscitation and life support equipment 24 hours per day.

The Trauma Care Leader for the Hudson Valley

As the lead hospital in the Hudson Valley regional trauma system, we provide leadership and total care for every aspect of injury, from prevention to rehabilitation. Our facility provides advanced patient care, conducts medical education, and performs trauma research which is presented at national symposiums. Our research programs serve as benchmarks for training the region's lifesaving personnel, including local EMTs, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency staff from community hospitals. Our research is so advanced, it has been used by the U.S. Government in the creation of a national program for regional trauma systems throughout the nation.
