Interdisciplinary Pain Medicine

Program Director Welcome

The Pain Medicine Fellowship at Westchester Medical Center exists to train the next generation of expert consultants.

The mission of the Pain Medicine Fellowship is to train physicians who exhibit compassion towards those who endure pain, professionalism in their demeanor, scholarship in their pursuits, competence in their ability, and advocacy for their community. The program's purpose is to treat all those impacted by pain and to improve their function and quality of life so that they may live with dignity. Fellows will be educated to the highest level of clinical expertise, in the full scope of pain medicine, to treat the broadest range of patients and their pain - from benign to malignant, acute to chronic, and curative to palliative. Our faculty actively participate in both clinical and didactic teaching in order to train fellows in a supportive and patient-oriented environment. In addition, the active Inpatient, Outpatient, and Interventional Services provide an exceptional and educational clinical experience.

We welcome your interest in our training program.

Sincerely,

Program Overview

The Pain Medicine Fellowship at Westchester Medical Center is designed to train fellows for independent practice in pain medicine. The fellowship is focused on patient care, through which fellows will become expert consultants in acute, chronic, and oncologic pain management.

Accreditation

The Pain Medicine Fellowship at Westchester Medical Center is an ACGME-accredited program.

Curriculum

The Pain Medicine curriculum involves robust clinical experiences, conferences (such as Spine Conference, Journal Club, and Case conference), and dedicated didactics covering relevant topics in pain medicine. Fellows will also gain experience in teaching both residents and medical students as they rotate through the services.

Didactics

The Fellow will attend dedicated didactic lectures covering a wide range of topics related to the practice of pain medicine, which are designed to cover all pertinent topics as outlined by the ACGME. In addition, the fellow is expected to attend the Pain Quality Council to learn about quality assurance, Case Conferences to discuss challenging or unique cases, Journal Club to review historically important and current literature, and departmental Grand Rounds.

Clinical Experience

The Pain Medicine Program at Westchester Medical Center treats a wide range of conditions. In addition, attendings regularly perform a variety of procedures. For more information, please visit WMCHealth Physicians Advanced Physician Services Pain Management page.

Rotations

At Westchester Medical Center, Pain Medicine fellows will rotate through a wide range of services, including three months of inpatient pain (which includes consultation on pediatric patients), three months of outpatient pain, three months of Interventions, and two weeks of acute pain. Additional specialty rotations include two weeks of neurology, two weeks of psychiatry, two weeks of physical medicine and rehabilitation, two weeks of palliative care, one week of neuroradiology, and one week of surgery.

Scholarly Activity

Fellows are required to participate in scholarly activities during their fellowship. This may include Grand Rounds presentations, case reports, preparation and publication of review articles, book chapters, manuals for teaching or clinical practice, and clinical research investigations. In addition, fellows are encouraged to present abstracts and interesting cases at major professional meetings.

Evaluation

Fellows will receive feedback on performance from faculty members via a confidential online system. In addition, fellows will receive feedback from multi-source evaluations by faculty, peers, residents, and nurses. This information is shared with the Clinical Competency Committee, and used to assess the fellow’s Milestones. With this information, the program director can meet with the Fellows to provide formative written feedback at least semi-annually resulting in a written summative evaluation.
