Vascular Neurology (Stroke) Fellowship

The Department of Neurology at New York Medical College offers an ACGME accredited Vascular Neurology (Stroke) fellowship. This is a one-year training program at Westchester Medical Center, the largest tertiary care medical referral center in the Hudson Valley region.

Message from Program Director

With over 700 stroke admissions per year, this fellowship offers the opportunity to gain experience with critically ill patients with ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachonid hemorrhage, vasculitis, dural vein thrombosis and unruptured vascular malformations. Critically ill patients are initially monitored in our new state- of -the- art 28-beds NeuroICU which is equipped with multimodality monitoring. During this one year of training, the stroke fellow will rotate through stroke inpatient service, stroke consult service, neuroradiology, neurosonology, neuroendovascular and neurorehabilitation. Fellows will learn to perform and interpret neurovascular ultrasound (TCDs, duplex studies) and will be qualified at the end of fellowship for neurosonology certification. WMC is a comprehensive stroke center and the stroke fellow will be involved in therapeutic interventions such as intravenous tPA, endovascular thrombectomy, intra-arterial thrombolysis, intracranial stenting, carotid stenting, and coiling of vascular malformations. Fellows will be an integral part of the stroke team which includes Vascular Neurologists, Neuroradialogists, Neuroendovascular surgeons and Neurointensivists. Outpatient training includes once a month continuity stroke clinic at hospital based clinic and in twice a week in private practice setting. This education experience is further enhanced by vascular didactic lecture series, departmental stroke conferences, multidisciplinary stroke conference and journal clubs throughout the year. The fellows are encouraged to participate in research which usually results in several publications in peer reviewed journals.
